Deed Fraud: a New Kind of Identity Theft

Description: Consider a scenario in which a new or current client contacts you and asks for help investigating the theft of the title to their home or commercial property. The client is particularly upset because the mortgage on the property had been paid off for several years and they had a clear title. How could this happen?  It is known as “deed theft” or “deed fraud” and it has been making the news headlines.  One of the most attention-getting cases occurred in May of 2024 when Nigerian identity thieves targeted Graceland, the former home of Elvis.  That property came within 24 hours of being sold at auction…out from under the rightful heir, the daughter of Lisa Marie Presley.  Another egregious case was that of a pastor in Dallas who was convicted of deed fraud for selling churches that he did not own.  In this session you will learn about the perpetrators and victims of deed fraud and what can be done to prevent it.  This is an important topic both professionally and personally.

Speaker:   Cara Hubbard, Senior Fraud Team Specialist and Assistant Escrow Manager at the Austin headquarters of Independence Title. With 23 years of experience in title insurance, she has held various roles including escrow assistant, escrow officer, in addition to her current position on the Administration/Fraud team. Cara's interest in fraud prevention and detection was sparked in 2021 when it emerged as a significant threat in the title industry. Her firm promptly established a dedicated fraud team and proactively implemented new procedures that included identity verification measures with the goal of staying ahead of fraudsters.
