Congress, Trustee Hall 104.  Refer to your Registration Confirmation (sent via email) for parking requirements. You must pre-register your vehicle to avoid a ticket.

Description:   Multiple sessions for 6 CPE hours (including 2 hours of Ethics) at a low cost of only $100 per Austin ACFE member (& $120 per non-member) plus lunch is provided for in-person participants.  Share this information with a colleague so they can attend, too!  Sessions will cover topics listed below.  Planned agenda with approximate times are below.

~8:30-9:00am  Welcome & Announcements (with Coffee & Networking)

~9:00-9:50am "Disentangling Commingled Funds" by Billy Petty, CFE (Director of Finance, Texas Access to Justice Foundation)  This session will draw from the speaker's decades of experience as a police detective, including 10 years as an investigator in the Austin Police Department's White Collar Crimes Unit and as a forensic accountant.  He will share his expertise for an introduction to disentangling commingled funds—an essential skill for preparing financial analysis to unravel complex financial fraud cases.

~10:00-10:50am  "Preparing a Successful Forensic Report" by Edmond Martin, CFE; Writing a successful report means that the reader understands your purpose, methodology, and outcomes...and that they believe it. With many years of experience as an IRS Special Agent and as a forensic accountant and expert witness, the speaker will share his insights about the art & science of writing successful reports.

~11:00am-noon  "Cascading Consequences of Cyberattacks" by Frederick (Fred) von Oldenburg.  The initial victim will not be the only one impacted by a cyberattack. Consequences will extend to customers, clients, employees, stockholders, and the community at large. Hackers are now targeting infrastructure. Learn about the recent Chinese hack of the U.S. telecomm system & others that demonstrate the changing threat landscape. A presentation & discussion on the importance of going beyond what is reported in commercial databases & what can be gleaned from analyzing data from primary sources. [Their presentation was featured at the ACFE Global meeting in summer 2024 and it was exceptional.]

~2:00-3:50pm "Dark Data: the Ethics & Risks of Collecting & Storing It" by Carolyn Conn, CFE, CPA and Will Chapman  [counts as 2 hours Ethics for ACFE; but, not for Texas CPAs] Learn what is meant by the term "dark data." Then, evaluate the legal parameters vs. ethical considerations and perform an ethical analysis related to dark data.  Another topic of discussion will be the potential risks of dark data.

  • Identify ways to disentangle commingled funds

  • Describe and implement methods for preparing successful forensic reports

  • Utilize sources of data for forensic analysis they might have not used before
