TOPIC: Cybersecurity Risk of Health Information Systems

speaker:  Dr. Diane Dolezel
Assistant Professor of Health Information
Texas State University

 Program Description:

When cyber-criminals gain access to a person’s healthcare information, they can create credit and obtain medical services in that name, and wreak other sorts of havoc.  By analyzing data from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (from more than 6,000 healthcare organizations), the speaker and her co-researcher have identified factors that occurred consistently in those organizations’ security breaches.  These risk factors should be considered in developing a risk management plan (as required by HIPAA).  Knowing these factors can help decrease cybersecurity risk for health care providers.

Dr. Diane Dolezel is an Assistant Professor of Health Information Management at Texas State University.  She holds three BS degrees (one in Math, one in Computer Science, and another in Health Information Management); she earned an MS in Computer Science, and an EdD in Instructional Leadership.  She has worked as a software engineer and a data base engineer in multiple healthcare organizations.  She is a Registered Health Information Administrator and a Health Data Analyst.  Dr. Dolezel has published articles and books as well as given presentations in the areas of health information management and data protection.
